Workshops

Each semester, SJSU Research Foundation presents grant proposal workshops for SJSU faculty and staff. Workshops cover topics such as - grant writing, budget planning, finding external funding sources using online resources - as well as information about specific sponsors and programs.

February 3 - Introduction to the SJSU Research Foundation

Location: MLK Library, Room 255/257
Time: 11:30 a.m. to 1:00 p.m.

Each year hundreds of funding agencies partner with the Research Foundation to engage SJSU faculty and other university specialists to perform basic and applied research, public service and community projects, consulting, and other specialized educational activities. This workshop will focus on how the Research Foundation is organized to help you locate and apply for external funding, as well as explore potential partnerships within the academic community. Learn how the Research Foundation and the SJSU Office of Graduate Studies and Research work together to enable and promote externally-funded programs. March 7 - Budget Basics - Developing Budgets for a Successful Proposal

Location: MLK Library, Room 255-257
Time: 11:30 a.m. to 1:00 p.m.

An important part of writing a successful grant proposal is developing a budget that clearly expresses the cost of your research project. Where do you begin when creating your budget? For example, do you plan to hire students, purchase supplies, rent space, or attend conferences? How will these costs affect your proposed budget? This workshop will be a step-by-step primer on the components of a proposal budget and how best to build a budget in response to an RFP (request for proposal). Each of the major line items in a typical budget will be discussed in detail. Important topics such as salaries, cost-sharing, facilities and administrative costs, and allowable costs will be addressed. RSVP to Nancy.Riley@sjsu.edu


April 16 - SBIR/STTR Workshop

Location: Loma Prieta Ballroom, Student Union
Time: 9:00 a.m. to 12:00 p.m.

In partnership with the Northeastern California Small Business Development Center at CSU Chico, and the CSU ChancellorŐs Office, this workshop will provide you with an overview of the Small Business Innovation Research/Small Business Technology Transfer programs and tips for successful proposal submittal. May 10 - Proposal Review Sessions Revealed - Marc d'Alarcao, Presenter

Location: MLK Library, Room 255/257
Time: 11:30 a.m. to 1:00 p.m.

Dr. Marc d'Alarcao, Biochemistry and Chemical Biology Professor, as an experienced Principal Investigator and reviewer for federal agencies, will provide an inside look at federal proposal review sessions. May 17 - Working with Funding Agency Program Officers

Location: MLK Library, Room 255/257
Time: 11:30 a.m. to 1:00 p.m.

In many instances federal agencies suggest that principal investigators contact program officers before submitting a proposal for federal funding. This workshop will help prepare you prepare for and learn how to confidently approach funding agency program officers for approvals and information you may need to submit successful proposals for external funding.
