SJSU receives $1.7 Million for Stem Cell Research
March 23, 2025

On March 23, 2009, the California Institute for Regenerative Medicine (CIRM) approved nearly $16 million for eleven California State University (CSU) campuses to study stem cell technology and advance the field of regenerative medicine. Of this funding, the SJSU Stem Cell Internships in Laboratory-based Learning (SJSU SCILL) proposal is slated to receive $1.7 million. The program will be led by Dr. John Boothby, Biological Sciences partnering with a local consortium of institutions and guided by an advisory committee.

CIRM, the state’s stem cell agency, was created to distribute nearly $3 billion in bond funding approved by the passage of Proposition 71 in 2004. CIRM is the largest funding organization for embryonic and pluripotent stem cell research in the world. It will oversee the Bridges to Stem Cell Research Awards for the facilitation of instruction, laboratory work, internship placement, faculty mentoring and career guidance.
